Revamped taxi rank almost ready
SUNNINGHILL - Contractor officials have promised that the Sunninghill taxi rank project will be completed by 15 February and stated sheeting and paving are the only elements left to be completed.
Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe held a site visit at the rank on 23 January to investigate the progress of the project.
The visit saw the arrival of key officials and council representatives including the Gauteng Department of Transportation and Johannesburg Property Company who are involved in the project. The project costs R800 000, however numerous delays, budget issues and contract problems have delayed the process.
The main issue at the rank is the lack of parking space which has been problematic for residents in the area.
Also on 23 January, before the site inspection of the rank, Deppe held an inspection at a vacant property in the area. She said that a proposal for a multi-model transportation facility has been put forward to city council and this would offer various forms of transport and facilities.
With the three-and-a-half hectare piece of land, Deppe aims to provide both residents and commuters with a stable and efficient transportation facility.
“This is still in the pipeline. I have also contacted the department of education [to propose the possibility] for a school [to be built] here,” said Deppe.
