Fourways resident seeks help in getting warmth for those in need
David Barrows, running a non-profit organisation he formed from a place of compassion and sympathy, is pleading to the community to donate items that will help those less fortunate with warmth this winter.
What began as an act of kindness soon became a calling for Fourways resident, David Barrows, who founded the Mahalia feeding scheme.
The scheme is based out of Lenasia. He chose that location because it is his hometown and he knows the struggles of the community.
Inspired by the words of his grandmother, Ruth Barrows: ‘He will serve the nation one day’, Barrows followed his passion. He said it started with something simple, yet profoundly impactful. He believes that when he uplifts others, he strengthens the community.

“We used to cater for funerals and weddings, and there were always some leftovers. We would pack them up to give to the ones in need. The response grew and that’s when we realised there was a lack of food nutrition in our community.”
Barrows asks for donations through the Fourways community online group, where he says community members are often eager to help.
“People usually ask us to collect the donations, so I wait until there’s a substantial amount. If I see someone on Facebook asking for help, I send them a direct message inviting them to collect donations from me, or if they live nearby, I deliver the items myself.
We also put together care packs for homeless people sleeping on the streets. There are a few regular boys near my house who often beg, and I give them shoes and warm clothing.”
One story that touched Yolandi Green, who works hand in hand with Barrows, was when a young couple who recently moved into an apartment reached out to her for some donations, including food for their two boys.
“At the time, the organisation had no food donations available. It was around 19:00, so I went to my own cupboards and fridge and gathered whatever food I had, packed it into a small parcel, and delivered to them.”

As winter approaches, it can be a very difficult time for those without clothing, blankets, and daily necessities. According to Green, the organisation has an opportunity to bring not only warmth but also hope and care to the people.
“This year’s winter drive is important because many families are facing greater challenges than ever before. Elderly people and vulnerable families are struggling to stay warm and comfortable during the cold season.”
This season, the needs around the organisation have become urgently and deeply felt. So many families have reached out for donations, whether it is warm clothing, blankets, non-perishable food, toiletries, or anything that can bring comfort and dignity through the cold months.
The organisation is appealing to the public for donations to make winter a little better for other families.
“To donate, please feel free to reach out directly to Green, who is in charge of collecting the donations, at 063 805 9413 or email her at landsdejager830725@gmail.com.”
