UPDATE: Police confirm shootout at Montecasino

MAGALIESSIG - Douglasdale police have confirmed a shootout between guards and alleged hijackers at Montecasino at around 10pm on 18 August.

According to Douglasdale police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, the incident took place at Palazzo Hotel in Montecasino but he could, however, not confirm whether the incident was an attempted hijacking and robbery.

He added that the victims had just arrived from OR Tambo International Airport. He said security guards at Montecasino spotted the suspects and approached the scene. The suspects then shot at the security guards who returned fire. He said the suspects fled the scene and abandoned the BMW X1 in Douglasdale as they fled on foot.

He said there were no injuries.

Priya Naidoo for Tsogo Sun’s group communications said, “We can confirm that there was a shooting incident on the evening of 18 August opposite the casino complex in Fourways.”

Douglasdale police are continuing with their investigations.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, Jean Berdou, thanked the Montecasino tactical unit, Sector 1 and 4 Neighborhood Watch, and the Douglasdale police for their outstanding actions which prevented the alleged hijacking.
