Chartwell residents fume over dust
CHARTWELL – Power Construction, the appointed contractor for the Cedar Road upgrade, recently released plans of hiring pointsmen to alleviate traffic after Chartwell residents on 2nd Road raised concerns over dust pollution which continues to plague their street.
Resident Pat Hemphill explained that many motorists were bypassing traffic on Cedar Road by going through 2nd Road.
“These cars are not moving slowly! They are fast. The dust that has been generated from all these cars is scary. It starts from the morning and dies down only after around 7pm, only to start again in the early morning,” she said.
Spokesperson for Power Construction, Zama Kokela, explained that the plan was to hire pointsmen to assist in alleviating the flow of traffic on Cedar Road. “Hiring pointsmen will cost us approximately R23 000 per month.”
Zokela added that the pointsmen would also stop cars from zipping onto 2nd Road.
However many residents feel that hiring pointsmen will not assist with the dust problem. Hemphill questioned, “We have a dust problem, how will a pointsman stop dust?”
Hemphill added that the only logical solution was to spray water onto 2nd Road to settle the dust.
“The pointsmen will not stop traffic completely and many cars will continue using our road as a detour,” she argued.
In response to complaints, Zokela added that if the pointsmen did not ease the issue, Power Construction would go back to the drawing board.
Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said, “Pointsmen are definitely part of the solution, however, more plans must be put in place to settle the dust and speeding cars.”
