Dog continues to fight for her life
FOURWAYS - Heidi, a dog that was found dumped next to the Hennops River bound tightly in a flour sack and secured with wire, is still fighting for her life.
According to Estelle Meldau of Woodrock Animal Rescue, Heidi was found covered in blood and was rushed to a vet on 7 November last year.
The dog was diagnosed with a condition called transmitted venereal disease and is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment.
Meldou said Heidi’s journey has been a sad one. She was initially rescued early in October last year, after Woodrock Animal Rescue received an urgent call from a man who explained that a black VW Polo pulled up next to the Hennops River and dumped what he initially thought was rubbish.
Meldau said, “The construction company that the man works for thought nothing of it at the time, but two days later, heard a dog barking and went down to the river to investigate.
“This poor dog had managed to free her face after three days lying in the cold and sun and started to bark as if calling for help.”
Nicholas Meldau, founder of Woodrock Animal Rescue, rushed to fetch the dog and although the rescue centre was full at the time, space was made for Heidi where she was treated for hyperthermia, a high temperature and dehydration. Meldau added that the dog slept a full day without moving and despite being very weak, she miraculously stood up to greet her rescuers the following day.
Heidi was taken to Manorswood Veterinary Clinic to be treated for a condition known as pyometra (an infection of the womb from having given birth recently) and biliary.
Although Heidi survived the operation, Meldau confirmed that she was still fighting for her life, and with proper care she should make a full recovery.
