City Power explains delays in restoring 270 Sunninghill streetlights

New account applications are required before electricity can be reconnected to hundreds of dark streetlights in Sunninghill.

Sunninghill residents face continued delays in the restoration of about 270 streetlights, with City Power confirming that affected supply points require new account applications before power can be reconnected.

City Power general manager Isaac Mangena said the non-functioning lights are not part of an active maintenance backlog.

“Currently, there are no streetlights due for repair in Sunninghill, except for areas where temporary supply has been provided as an interim measure while maintenance work is being scheduled,” said Mangena.

The 270 streetlights were disconnected by Eskom after inspections revealed they had no meters attached. Because the supply points are not linked to existing municipal accounts, City Power teams must apply for new accounts to resume service.

Mangena explained that administrative and technical procedures are delaying progress, as compliant processes require City Power to reapply for project resumption, follow full operational protocol, and complete network handovers to the maintenance department.

City Power denied operational negligence, pointing out that infrastructure theft and vandalism across Johannesburg further complicate network stability.

Stolen feeder lines and damaged cables have prompted the utility to introduce alternative solar-powered streetlights in vulnerable locations, such as Nasrec and Beyers Naudé Drive in Emmarentia.

For Sunninghill, however, restoration remains dependent on processing the required supply point accounts, and City Power cannot yet provide a definitive completion date.

Faults can be logged through CityPower.mobi or by calling the City Power Call Centre on 011 490 7484 or 0800 202 925.

Eskom was contacted for comment on September 21 regarding the reported disconnections affecting supply points and the circumstances surrounding the matter. Its response will be included once received.
