As part of this drive, Grade 0 pupils from the Wise Owl class undertook a project to raise the funds. Ilsa Adlem, teacher of the Wise Owls class, explained that each pupil took a loan of R100 from the school bank in order to have capital funds to create their item to sell at the market day. “The theme was letter land and each child had a letter of the alphabet and their goodies had to reflect the letter. The child with the letter ‘P’ dressed up as a pirate and sold popcorn and the child with the letter ‘Z’ dressed up as a zebra and sold Zoo Biscuits.”
Following the exciting market day, each child had to count their takings, pay their loans back to the school bank and then determine how much profit was made. “This was an interesting and challenging learning curve for the Grade 0’s and they were able to get an understanding of profit and loss in business.
In total, the Wise Owls raised a profit of R3 200, which they used to uplift a needy and deserving community school,” Adlem explained.
The pupils identified Blair Atholl School as a worthy recipient and then agreed that the best way was to spend the money on books and readers for the school.
Reader’s Warehouse at Broadacres Lifestyle Centre were very happy to assist with the selection and purchase of over 70 books for the donation.
Finally, the Wise Owl pupils, accompanied by Adlem and owner of Broadacres Academy and Farm Nursery School, Nigel Fitton, handed over the books to the school.
Adlem explained that this experience was vital in making the pupils understand the warm and fuzzy feeling that goes with caring for the less fortunate, and giving to those in need.
