Career Expo broadens horizons beyond university for Diepsloot youth

Afrika Tikkun’s Career Expo challenged learners to rethink success by introducing them to entrepreneurs, creatives and professionals who proved there is more than one path to a bright future.

Afrika Tikkun Wings of Life hosted a Career Expo to equip Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners with practical guidance for life after matric, where Young people were encouraged to look beyond traditional career paths.

The event brought together professionals from various industries, including entrepreneurship, arts and culture, sport and community development, to share their personal journeys and offer advice on navigating the world of work.

Event organiser, Katlego Mamabolo, said the idea was born during a leadership training programme where young leaders reflected on the challenges facing their community.

“We realised that young people are always looking for change, but we also need to become the change we want to see.”

He explained that while many learners are encouraged to pursue university studies, this was not the only route to success.

“We wanted to expose learners to different opportunities. Not everyone will go to university, and that’s okay. There are careers in the arts, entrepreneurship, fashion, sport and many other industries where young people can thrive.”

Initially, organisers planned to partner with one local school, but the idea had to change when school holidays made access difficult.

Instead, the expo was hosted at the Afrika Tikkun centre, allowing learners from several schools across Diepsloot to attend.

Among the guest speakers was arts and entertainment professional Khwezi Mbina, who shared honest insights into the realities of working in the creative industry.

“It was fulfilling to engage with learners because they have dreams. My journey won’t be the same as theirs, but if my experiences can prepare or encourage them to face challenges with confidence, then I’ve achieved something.”
