Retirement village holds Christmas party for children

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale Retirement Village held a Christmas party for the children of St Laurence’s Children’s Haven on 28 November.

The retirement village spoilt the little ones with cakes, drinks and sweets, and gave them a chance to meet Santa Claus as he gave them Christmas gifts for being good.

St Laurence’s Children’s Haven was founded in January 2002 under the auspices of the Roodepoort Child and Family Welfare Society. It is a place of safety for abused and abandoned boys and girls of all races and creeds aged between six months and 18 years. They look after between 28 to 35 children at a time, with about 28 children on a full-time basis. Last year, they provided care for a total of 63 children. Some children stay at the haven for a couple of months, while others have been with there for over 10 years.

The children at the haven experience love and care in a secure and warm environment. They receive three cooked meals a day, bath or shower daily, attend local schools and are supervised by trained house parents who are approved by Child and Family Welfare.

The eventful day’s message from the retirement village to the children was that they are special and that someone cares about them.
