Santa senior shoe box donation a success

LONEHILL – The Lonehill Senior Citizens Coffee Club recently donated a collection of items to their chosen charity, Marmanet Frail care in Terenue, Pretoria.

The donation comprised a range of items boxed in a beautifully decorated shoe boxes, handmade by members of the club during their weekly creativity classes.

Initiated in 2012 by Dr Adele Romanis, the club has more than doubled in size, comprising 50 active members.

“From small beginnings this group has grown from a cautious 10 to a lively 50 who now actively participate in the monthly meetings held in the Village Church Community Hall in Lonehill,” Romanis said.

Through her work, Romanis has recognised the need to provide the elderly in Lonehill and the surrounding areas with an opportunity to meet monthly, to create new friendships and to form networking groups.

According to Romanis, the club is a vehicle to prevent social isolation which is widely recognised as a prime cause of depression and other illnesses in the elderly. “It is very heartening to see the new relationships that have been formed over the past three years,” she said.

Each meeting covers a specific topic which is of interest to members, as well as tea, coffee and cake, courtesy of Pick n Pay and Mugg and Bean, Lonehill.

There is also a lucky draw where the winner is awarded a beautiful bouquet of flowers sponsored by the Fourways Flower Market in Pineslopes.

Meetings will commence again on 20 January from 10am to 11.30am at the Lonehill Village Church Community Centre on Crestwood Drive, Lonehill.

All seniors are welcome to join.
