Stokvel robbed of over R130 000

DIEPSLOOT - Four women were robbed of R137 000 after making a cash withdrawal from a bank at Diepsloot Mall.

Diepsloot Police have previously partnered with stokvel associations to create awareness of how money should be shared.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for Diepsloot Police, a 57-year-old and three others were allegedly robbed of an amount of R137 438 soon after a cash withdrawal was made from a bank at Diepsloot Mall.

Apparently having made the cash withdrawal, the women placed the money in a  plastic shopping bag and boarded a taxi near the mall exit.

Soon after, an armed suspect alighted from a vehicle that had stopped next to the taxi.

The suspect reportedly pointed a handgun at one of the victims.

He stole the cash without firing any shots. The suspects dashed back into the same car and fled scene.

The police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

Mavimbela said, “We would like to remind the stokvel participants that huge cash withdrawals should not be an option when savings have to be shared. Rather work out your calculations before visiting the bank. Request the bank to transfer money into each individual’s bank account as agreed by all the stokvel participants.”
