A weekend operation by Diepsloot Police resulted in 70 suspects being arrested for various crimes, including murder, rape, possession of unlicensed handguns, ammunition and suspected stolen cash, public drinking, possession of dagga and business robbery.
Spokesperson of the Diepsloot Police Station, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said the weekend events were characterised by high police activity through stop-and-searches, intelligence-driven night raids, informer activity and community engagement.
“During the early hours of Friday morning, three men aged between 21 and 32 were caught for possession of two unlicensed handguns, ammunition and suspected stolen cash. Two of the suspects were caught during the raid in extension two. The third suspects was arrested in extension seven, where the cash was seized. Both intelligence-driven raids netted a handgun and ammunition each,” Mavimbela said.
Mavimbela explained that police believe one of the handguns was robbed from a security guard in Cosmos City, near Honeydew.
“The three suspects will be charged separately with unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.”

“While our officers spent sleepless nights hunting for wanted suspects, others ensured that the two suspects who were caught for the alleged murder of a 17-year-old boy at a tavern in extension twelve, have their day in court,” Mavimbela said.

The two men appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning. Their case was postponed to 20 of May 2016.
Mavimbela said the remaining suspects are expected to appear in court by Tuesday.
The weekend’s operations were recapped during a well-attended community meeting in extension twelve on 15 May. The briefing was led by the Acting Station Commander of Diepsloot Police Station, Colonel Koena Moichela, who was accompanied by his spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.
