EMER-G- MED released the following statement late on Saturday evening in regards to the fire:

Just after 7.30pm this evening EMER-G-MED’s RV1, RV3 and M07 responded to reports of a house fire in Chartwell.

Paramedics arrived on the scene to find the City Of Joburg Fire Department fighting to control the blaze. Two people, a man and a woman, were reported to have been trapped within the house.

Firefighters entered the burning building and were able to rescue the trapped woman – who was in a serious condition and required Advanced Life Support care. The patient was stabilised on-scene before being transported by another service to a nearby hospital.

The trapped man was sadly found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

EMER-G-MED paramedics provided medical support and refreshments for the firefighters, some of which were treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation and dehydration.

P01, EMER-G-MED’s partnership vehicle with Akeso Psychiatric Hospital Group, was called in to provide counselling for the family, friends and neighbours of the deceased who were on the scene.

A big shout out and thanks to the expert team of Firefighters from Lonehill Fire Department, who did an awesome job to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be under investigation by the relevant authorities.
