Ward councillor calls for urgent road reinstatement in Fourways

Unfinished road repairs, following water pipe bursts, continue to leave hazardous, tarless patches on busy local routes.

A water burst may have been repaired, but the work is incomplete until the road surface is properly restored, according to Ward 94 councillor David Foley.

Foley used the intersection of Mulbarton Drive and Winnie Mandela Drive, at the entrance to the Leaping Frog Shopping Centre, to highlight ongoing delays with road reinstatements following municipal repairs. He noted that a section of the road damaged during a previous burst remains without tar, despite a work order being issued by Johannesburg Water.

The damaged area covers a significant section of a busy route. Foley said although the damage falls across a turning lane and a straight lane – slightly easing the impact – it points to a wider issue. He added that depot managers and Johannesburg Water management are aware of the issue and trying to resolve it, but urged authorities to ensure local depots receive adequate resources.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that a work order had been issued for the site. “It is true. After Johannesburg Water repairs a burst pipe, backfilling is completed. After backfilling, if a tar reinstatement is needed, Johannesburg Water creates a work order to request Johannesburg Roads Agency to complete the reinstatement job. The wayleave number for this particular work request is 1203564,” she said.

Johannesburg Roads Agency was contacted for comment on September 3 and promised to revert. An update will be provided once a response is received.
