Mover and shaker, a woman in the making

FOURWAYS – To commemorate Women's Month, Fourways Review, interviewed actress, TV presenter, radio host, singer and producer, Relebogile Mabotja.

“I believe that it is very important to have our voice heard in the industry as women, as there is a lot of transformation that can be seen and vast opportunities out there for women. I also believe that women can be and do anything that men can do,” Mabotja said.

Born and bred in Pretoria, Mabotja, showed she had talent as an entertainer at the age of five. While in school, she received recognition as a young actress and singer and in her final year of high school, she was granted the opportunity to play a role in the stage production, Fame The Musical.

Mabotja, who is a Fourways resident, performed at the opening of the 46664 Concert at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and has also performed alongside musicians Mara Louw, Shelly Meskin and Jo Redburn.

She has been a presenter on the e.tv show, BackChat, and has had acting roles in shows such as Home Affairs, Zone 14 and Generations on SABC 1 and also appeared on the SABC 2 show, Kompleks.

“I am a lover of life, creative and passionate in what I do. I feel very blessed to be able to show passion through my music, television roles and radio,” she said.

In 2010, Mabotja hosted a reality competition, Dance Your Butt Off on SABC 1 and in 2012 she secured a role as a freelance radio presenter on Talk Radio 702 which she is currently doing.

“I enjoy interacting with people and I am very curious of how people think. When hosting my talks on radio, I love the fact that people can disagree on certain topics as they bring their issues to the table, as some of the topics many may think are taboo to talk about in society,” she added.

Other than her radio show, Mabotja, is seen as a busy woman who is also involved in producing Afro Cafè and Crown Gospel Music Awards, among her other projects.

When asked what sets her apart from other women in the industry, Mabotja said, “I try not to compare myself to other women as I believe we all have something to contribute, however, what sets me apart from other women is that I am able to produce a show and technically direct it with the acting roles and musical background I have acquired,” she said.

“My future goals are to start my own [charity] foundation as it is very important for one to give back to those in need. I want to be a tool for a greater purpose and to become a vessel in someone’s life. On the broadcasting side of things, I hope to push boundaries as a producer, musician and actress.”
