A holiday message from Animal Ark
FOURWAYS – Animal Ark Centre provides some tips for taking care of animals during their holiday message.
It’s the busiest time of the year for Ark Animal Centre because while many animals are adopted, far more are brought into the shelter because of the holidays, impulse adoptions as well as pets that find themselves lost.
We would like to give you a few tips when it comes to caring for your fur children and to make sure that they are safe and looked after while you’re taking a break from work.
If you’re going away and you haven’t managed to find a kennel/cattery, it’s best to give your vet a call to ask about pet sitters. Most vets know the sitters they would recommend and are happy to give references.
Kennels are normally fully booked in advance, so planning ahead will always relieve stress. Unfortunately, most shelters are already full and we land up with so many dogs that have been dumped because people are going away and don’t know what to do with their pets.

Please amake sure your pet always has fresh water. Keeping the bowl in a shaded spot will help lessen evaporation during the day. Boil some chicken stock with water, place it into ice trays and let it freeze. This treat will allow your pup to stay hydrated, busy and cool all in one go.New Year’s Eve is a terrible time for pets. If you know they fear loud noises, pop into your vet and ask for some calming tablets. Bringing your pets inside, having the television on loud and the windows closed help too. You can also use a shirt with the sleeves cut off as a snug-fitting vest. This helps them feel secure and can help with keeping them calmer.
If your pet does go missing, please always check the vets and the shelters. Animals can wonder further than we could imagine, so call everyone you can, and don’t forget about Facebook.
An animal is a gift that keeps on giving. However, please make sure that you and your family are aware of the life-long commitment having a pet comes with. If you’ve decided you’re ready for a new family member, we’d be happy to meet you and help you choose a new best friend. We hope you all have a safe and wonderful festive season!
