Olico students in Diepsloot achieve 100% pass rate

DIEPSLOOT – Find out how the efforts of a local non-profit organisation have helped Diepsloot matrics achieve a 100 per cent matric pass rate.

The Open Learning In Community non-profit organisation (Olico) is proud to announce that the Diepsloot schoolgoers, who the organisation has helped over the past four years, have graduated with a 100 per cent matric pass rate, with 83 per cent of them achieving marks above 50 per cent in mathematics.
A total of 83 per cent of the schoolgoers also received bachelor level passes.

The organisation has provided bi-weekly maths support after school to township youth since 2012, meaning schoolgoers who graduated as part of last year’s class were in Grade 8 when the organisation’s work in the community began. When this class was first enrolled in 2012, it had a mathematics average of 18 per cent.

Olico’s maths coordinator, Dr Lynn Bowie said, “Over the past five years, these learners have worked tirelessly to improve their maths skills and deserve all the credit they’re now receiving. In short, their commitment and dedication have been outstanding and they are reaping the rewards.

“For many learners, the time and support available in school hours are simply not sufficient to cover all that needs to be covered, so Olico’s after-school support and blended use of technology is one way in which we can supplement the work of the teacher.”

The matric class in Diepsloot is part of a larger group of 145 pupils between grades 7 and 12 who receive the extra maths support from Olico. The organisation uses a combination of a custom-built free online mathematics programme along with skilled maths tutors in order to improve foundational number skills and supplementary curriculum support for pupils.

Olico participant, Patience Moyo believes Olico made a huge difference to her maths results and said, “When I first joined Olico, my maths was poor but by practising with Olico’s support, my results have really improved. I want to start a new life at university and graduate as a psychologist to help people and be an example of what success is to my community.”

Moyo’s classmate Roda Chitegha believes the organisation has helped her unlock her potential and achieve her goals and said, “Coming in the afternoons since Grade 8 has helped to keep me away from trouble and temptation that faces the youth of Diepsloot

“Olico has helped ensure my results at school are always good and I can go to university. I have registered for a BSC. But this is not my only dream, I also want to see myself as a role model to others showing that matric success in maths is, indeed, possible.”
