On the same day, a private funeral service was held for the rugby legend at Lewende Woord Church in Brummeria, Pretoria, and South Africans across the country donned the famous green rugby jersey in his honour.

Children of Junior College Fourways and Junior College Gardens, as well as some staff members, took the opportunity to honour the late sports icon.
“Joost will always be remembered as South Africa’s blue-eyed boy of rugby who lost his battle with motor neurone disease on Monday,” said Chenelle Lakhay, principal of Junior College Gardens.
Elizabeth Jooste, principal of Junior College Preschool Fourways, added that she was very proud that her children understood why they wore their Springbok jerseys.
