Kitting out our men in blue at Douglasdale Police Station

DOUGLASDALE – Our police officers received some new uniforms donated to them, but not the kind you would expect. Find out more here.

Our boys in blue have just received some new uniforms, but not the kind you would expect.

The kits that have been handed out are blue and white and are more suited to running up and down a sports field than for running after criminals.

Kapara Insurance Brokers made a special visit to the Douglasdale Police Station, bearing takeaway lunches and soccer kits for the Douglasdale officers who are part of the station’s soccer team.

“We’ve donated about 15 full soccer kits, a soccer ball, socks and a kit bag to the station,” said Morag Dover, a director at the company and the driving force behind the donation. “We know how hard our police work for the community and we wanted to give them something to say thank you.”

Although the company is not based in the Fourways area, Morag said they chose to make the donation because a number of their clients lived in the northern suburbs.

The Douglasdale station’s soccer team was started in 1999 and since then has mostly played against teams made up of officers from other police stations.

Warrant Officer Sizwe Ngobese, who has coached the team since its inception, was overjoyed at the donation.

“It’s great to have these new kits,” Ngobese told the Fourways Review. “You can see how widely I’m smiling. [The team] has been looking for sponsorships for quite a while now, and I’m so glad that today they finally got some.”

The team has about 26 members who participate in weekly games to stay fit and to socialise with their colleagues and the wider community.

“Soccer is a wonderful occasion for officers to socialise with their community,” added Colonel Happy Goodenough Xaba, who was also present for the kit handover. Xaba announced that by the end of the year the Douglasdale police team would start playing against community teams in the area.

“We’ll be launching police versus resident games in Sector 2 first, so instead of just supporting your police you can actually play them.”
