Local athletes compete at the 2017 Commonwealth Bench Press and Raw Powerlifting Championships

FOURWAYS – Six members of the Yard Althletic in Fourways won big at the 2017 Commonwealth Bench Press and Raw Powerlifting Championships, held in Potch recently.

 

Strength coach Joshua Capazorio from The Yard Athletic took six of his athletes to participate at the 2017 Commonwealth Bench Press and Raw Powerlifting Championships, where team members won 15 medals in total!

The competition took place in Potchefstroom from the 11–17 September and is the second biggest powerlifting competition in the world.

Toni Coetzee, Joshua Capazorio, Ilona Wilson and James MacIntosh show off a few of the medals won at the 2017 Commonwealth Bench Press and Raw Powerlifting Championships.

All Commonwealth countries have the opportunity to send their strongest men and women to the tournament.

All the Capazorio’s athletes performed exceptionally well, bringing home a total of 15 medals between the six of them.

The awards are as follows:

 

  • Craig Van Wyk -120kg Master 1 Division

Bench Press – Gold

 

  • Ilona Wilson -57kg Master 1 Division

Squat – Silver

Bench press – Bronze

Deadlift – Silver

Total overall – Silver

 

  • Jonathan Baptista -82kg Open Division

Squat – Bronze

Bench press – Silver

Total overall – 4th Place

 

  • Candice Coetzer -72kg Open Divison

Squat – Silver

Bench Press – Silver

Deadlift – Silver

Total Overall – Silver

 

  • Debbie McAlpine -72kg Master 1 Division

Squat – Bronze

Bench Press – Bronze

Total overall – Bronze
