DIEPSLOOT – Read what Shumbashaba – Horses Helping People are up to.
In a bid to give back to the community, Shumbashaba – Horses Helping People, has been hosting its #HorseAppreciationProgramme where, every Saturday, they provide a variety of activities from 9am to 12pm for 200 children from Diepsloot.
On 20 February, the programme had 31 participants who set to undergo six weeks of training before they could move on to other horse riding programmes and leaping activities.
Located at Shillelagh Farm in Diepsloot, the horses helping people aims to give the children of Diepsloot life skills and motivation to succeed in the real world.
Jacky du Plessis of Shumbashaba Community Trust stated that they use horses to promote the mental and physical well-being of the children. “The programme has proven to be heartwarming and fulfilling to see as the children grow in this programme,” Du Plessis said.
“Through the programme, they reach out and touch the lives of more than 250 000 people in places where unemployment, poverty and crime are rampant.”
They have had participants who went through their programmes to Special Olympics and other international and local riding events, which help the children do better in school and avoiding drugs and other negative behaviours.
Du Plessis explained that people with or without disabilities are welcome to use their services. “The income earned from private fee-paying clients is an important source of income, which contributes towards running our outreach programmes for participants who cannot afford it. The outstanding funds are raised through fundraising events and donations.”
Shumbashaba is a non-profit community organisation.
