Christmas may be long past, but the children of Diepsloot still got to feel the joy of receiving special gifts just for them.

At the end of last year, the Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club hosted its annual toy drive which saw gifts handed out to less-fortunate and needy children in surrounding communities. Response from the public was generous, and at the end of the holiday season, a number of toys collected had not been needed by organisations that the drive had been aimed at helping.

“I have dealings with the Diepsloot Foundation and knew they ran an Early Childhood Development centre and were involved with others in the area,” explained Cynthia Lewis for the Rotary Club. “So I thought we could package up some of the toys we had and give them to a couple of the crèches in Diepsloot.”

Six crèches out of an estimated 40 within the Diepsloot area were selected to receive the excess toys, with each location caring for between 30 and 40 children aged between two and six years of age.The toys given out were all plastic ones which can survive the wear and tear of childhood play and will probably be kept at the crèches for the children to enjoy during the school day.

“We still have some toys left over even after this handover to crèches,” continued Lewis, “and these will be given to Shumbashaba in Diepsloot, who do a lot of work for the kids there and run a Saturday care programme.”

Fourways Main Reef Rotary’s support of Shumbashaba will also continue in the future, as the club has committed to help source electrification and more abolition facilities for their property off of Mnandi Road.
