ICYMI: A healthy take on World Baking Day

NORTHRIDING – As the planet celebrated World Baking Day on 17 May, the local Nutriseed café put a healthier twist on the celebration.

There were sweet treats with a difference this World Baking Day when the Nutriseed Café in Northriding hosted a special, health-inspired event in honour of the day.

World Baking Day falls on 17 May and according to daysoftheyear.com was created to allow people to ‘spread the joy of baking around the world’. Nutriseed, the health food and pre-mix company based in Deco Park, decided to celebrate the event in their own special way with tasty treats that are good for you and gluten-free, as the month of May is also Celiac Awareness Month.

“We wanted to introduce [our visitors] to food that is not just delicious, but that is actually good for you and full of nutrients,” explained Nadine Hardy Petzer, managing director of Nutriseed. “There need to be products available out there for those who want to eat healthily.”

Guests were treated to an array of baked goods from the NuMe and NuSeed range of products, including gluten-free bread rolls served with soup, gluten-free chocolate brownies and an incredible chocolate ganache cake (also gluten-free) which Hardy Petzer spent a year working on before finding the perfect recipe.

Guests arrived from the media and included Kalpesh Dullabh, the food blogger behind the Foodie Whipped SA website.

“In my blog, I focus on healthy recipes and eating,” Dullabh told the Fourways Review.

Also present on the day was a clinical nutritionist, Desi Horsman, who discussed gluten intolerance and allergies with the audience and explained that while a gluten-free diet may seem like just a fad, there is an actual science behind it.

The café – which acted as the venue – is not yet open to the public, but in the next month or so will be launched as a food emporium where customers can enjoy coffee and food while engaging with the brand health food, which is currently available in stores like Dis-Chem.
