A hunger strike by prisoners at Leeuwkop Correctional Services unconfirmed

KYALAMI – Correctional services department is unaware of any hunger strike at Leeuwkop.

The Department of Correctional Services said it was unaware of a hunger strike rumoured to be taking place at Leeuwkop Correctional Services.

The department’s spokesperson for Gauteng Region, Mocheta Monama, said they have noted the rumour with concern.

“During the morning of 27 June, the inmates selected a few representatives who handed a letter with a list of grievances to the head of the correctional centre,” he said.

“The inmates demanded to be addressed by the regional commissioner to further emphasise their grievances.”

However, he added that the department was unaware of any hunger strike. “The majority of inmates had both their breakfast and lunch as normal. Although we are unaware of a strike, our security officials are monitoring the situation.”

Monama added that the department would ensure that the grievances submitted by the inmates received the attention they deserved.
