Wetlands specialist Paul Fairall has passed away

DOUGLASDALE – And now we are calling on you to share your special memories of the environmentalist.

The Douglasdale Retirement Village has confirmed that wetland specialist, Paul Fairall, passed away on Thursday night, 30 August.

Fairall was well-known in the Fourways, Kyalami and Midrand communities, among many others, and served on many boards and forums.

He was a member of the board of trustees of The South African Wetland Society, the chair of the Jukskei River Catchment Area Management Forum, Wetlands in Crisis-Gauteng Wetland Forum and National Wetlands in Crisis. He was also a member of the steering committee of the Limpopo/Crocodile West/Marico Catchment Management Agency and the Moreleta/Apies/Pienaars Sub-Catchment.

He was also acknowledged for his achievements. He was the recipient of  the 2012 National Mondi Award for Wetland Stewardship, the recipient of  the 2013 Wetland Stewardship Award from the Gardens of the Golden City, Johannesburg and the recipient of  the Rotarian Vocational Award ” Service above self ” 2014.

Fairall was often quoted on environmental issues in the Fourways Review and other Caxton publications, and always took extra care to explain the matters to journalists and community members.
