Everyone’s a winner at Unity College

FOURWAYS - Sports day at special needs school emphasizes participation over achievement.

Unity College sports field was the place to be on Saturday 11 May as the special needs school hosted their annual sports day.

There were three teams: The Blue Cranes, Yellow Weavers and Red Bishops. Among the activities of the day was the mixed challenge race, in which the learners were required to balance a cricket ball on a paper plate while running to the finish line. Jason Gerber of the Red Bishops took the lead in the senior race, but he was then overtaken by Miles Sacke, whose focus and agility enabled him to gain valuable points for the Yellow Weavers.

At the conclusion of the day, the Blue Cranes were crowned the overall winners with a whopping 78 points, followed by the Yellow Weavers with 56 points, and the Red Bishops, who came third, with 43 points. The Yellow Weavers were also awarded the spirit trophy for their great sportsmanship displayed on the day.

Deon Visser, the principal at Unity College, was pleased with the day’s proceedings. “This is one of our highlights.”

Visser thanked the parents who showed support on the day, and said that more events are planned for later in the year.
