Covid-19: 8 773 new cases reported on 5 July

A further 173 people died of the virus as of 5 July.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize reported that on 5 July, 8 773 new cases of Covid-19 were reported with the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the country sitting at 196 750.

A further 173 people had died of the virus as of 5 July, two of whom were from the Northern Cape, 10 from the Free State, 21 from KwaZulu-Natal, 29 from the Eastern Cape, 40 from the Western Cape and 71 from Gauteng. The total number of deaths so far sits at 3 199.

The Western Cape still sits with the highest number of cases of Covid-19 in the country with 69 531 cases, with Gauteng following closely behind with 63 404 cases. The Eastern Cape case numbers are rapidly growing with 35 648 cases.

Mkhize reported that 93 315 people have recovered from the virus thus far.

The Western Cape has experienced the highest number of Covid-19 deaths, sitting at a total of 2 066. The Eastern Cape has seen 519 deaths and Gauteng total deaths sits at 353.

A total of 38 083 new tests have been conducted as of 5 July, with a total of 1 830 161 tests conducted thus far.
