Sandton police arrested a warden at the Leeuwkop Correctional Facility in Sunninghill for dealing in drugs on 1 September.
According to the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station Captain Granville Meyer, “Correctional officers were busy conducting routine searches at the entrance to the facility [Leeuwkop prison] and upon searching him [the warden], the members discovered a plastic bag containing marijuana and an undisclosed amount of cash.”
The 48-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs and is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 2 September.
Meyer said, “Drug crime will remain a priority for Sandton SAPS and we will continue with our onslaught to root out the scourge.”
Regional communications coordinator at the Department of Correctional Services Zandile Mabunda confirmed that an official was found in possession of dagga.
“An official was found in possession of dagga during the routine search at the entrance of the Leeuwkop Correctional Facility,” said Mabunda.
“A joint investigation between the Department of Correctional Services and the South African Police Services (Sandton) is currently underway to establish more details and also to determine whether there was an element of dealing in drugs and to take action against an alleged implicated official for any wrong doing,” added Mabunda
