Joburg Open to return in November

JOBURG – R19.5 million up for grabs for this year's Joburg Open winner.

The City’s annual international golfing tournament to tee-off between 19 and 22 November.

The City of Johannesburg is proud to announce that the fairways of Randpark Golf Club will host the Joburg Open. This will be the first international men’s golf tournament on local shores in nine months according to the City and it will also be the first of a run of tournaments co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and European Tour this summer, with further announcements expected later.
Executive Mayor Geoff Makhubo expressed, “We are delighted to announce the return of this world-class golf tournament to our world-class African city. Since the inception of this tournament in 2007, our vision has been that the Joburg Open must benefit all the residents of Johannesburg.”
In addition to this the mayor stated that the Joburg Open’s return to the international golfing calendar is a timely boost for the South African economy as it emerges from the lockdown.

Due to Covid-19 health and safety protocols, the tournament has its own bio-bubble being created for players, caddies, tournament staff and media. The tournament will consist of three layers of the bio-bubble. The players, caddies and staff members that need to be in direct contact will be restricted to the inner bubble and will not be allowed to leave. The media and players will be given the chance to engage in outdoor spaces that will be allocated. The media centre will be stationed in the mid-bubble while the outer bubble will cater for staff that do not need direct access to players.

The international golf tournament was last played in 2017 before the City agreed to support the Sunshine Tour and absorb this event into the South African Open Championship. With 156 professional and international golfers battling it out for the R19.5-million prize, commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, Thomas Abt is excited to see best golfers returning to Randpark Ridge. He stated, “We are extremely pleased to welcome back the Joburg Open to our schedule in what is also a momentous moment for South African professional golf as we also welcome back international competition to our fairways after a lengthy break.”
