Young author bravely shares her experiences living in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT– Lebese explains that her book was a fictional story that emanated from real life experiences and she wants authorities to do something to help her community.

Young author and community activist Itumeleng Lebese is on a mission to apprise the world of daily struggles, events and living conditions in her neighbourhood of Diepsloot.

Itumeleng is a Grade 12 learner at Kwena Molapo Comprehensive Farm School where she developed a love for writing. She released her first 72-page fiction book, titled Trouble in Diepsloot, in November last year.

Following a series of horrifying events that she witnessed on the streets of Diepsloot, Itumeleng said she decided to shout for help through pen and paper.

“This is my first book offering that is aimed at calling the attention of our authorities and the world to lend a helping hand in the fight against countless social ills that we are facing as the Diepsloot community.

“The voice in the title of the book is actually myself screaming for help and informing the world that there are troubles in Diepsloot. The book focuses and tells the story of all bad things that are happening in my community.

“The book is a fictional story about a young girl who was born in Limpopo and later moves to Diepsloot to live with her parents.

“The girl witnessed multiple killings of people in front of her. It also tells a story about her friend who went missing and was later found in a sewage pipe under the bridge.”

She added that those who had read her book have shown appreciation of her work and encouraged her to write another book that will speak more about positive stories and events in the township.

“I am currently busy with my second book which will also be available in Sepedi,” she concluded.
