MMC confident of City Power’s service delivery abilities
JOBURG – MMC believes DA statements creates an impression that City Power can only function when contractors are appointed.
MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services for the City of Joburg, Mpho Moerane, has refuted claims by a DA councillor that Joburg was entering a period of non-stop power interruptions and challenges to resolve them.
DA Shadow MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Nicole van Dyk had claimed that for many months, the City Executive had been well aware of the tsunami of darkness that was about to hit the city, and had stood by and done nothing but watch with voyeuristic intention.
She alleged, “As it stands right now there are not nearly enough teams to cope with outages across the city that currently stand at over 1 500. “
Moerane condemned the statements as false. He said, “The statement does not only attempt to cause unnecessary panic across the city, but also creates an impression that City Power can only function when contractors are appointed, and that without them, the utility cannot function.”
He rejected Van Dyk’s utterances that the City had not appointed any contractors which would lead to prolonged power interruptions for residents and businesses.
“City Power has not failed to appoint labour contractors. To this effect, some of the contractors who have already been appointed are working on some of the existing power interruptions side by side with our teams.”
Van Dyk had called on the MMC to ensure that the processes to appoint new contractors were followed to avoid leaving residents stuck in the dark.
Moerane responded by pledging to residents that Van Dyk’s prophecy would not come to fruition. “The City of Johannesburg is not in darkness, and will not be plunged into darkness for as long as the African National Congress is in office in this city,” he said.
