HeronBridge College reflects on education in 2020
NIETGEDACHT – The Covid-19 has brought new changes in terms of online learning for HeronBridge College, but the hopes of keeping learners' well-being in a good state is a goal moving forward into the new year.
At the end of a very interesting academic year thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, HeronBridge College deputy head Simon Crane spoke about the way in which education continued during the Covid-induced lockdown period.
Crane said Covid-19 has changed the way in which education and learning have been conducted, moving from the classroom to, ‘web-based synchronous teaching, enabling us to not have one single day of school lost this year’.
“While we are very pleased [with moving to online teaching], we are particularly aware that online schooling for many has proven to be a difficult concept. It has removed from learners that community and togetherness that they both need and want.”
Crane said the most important thing for the college has been making sure their learners get the emotional support since not all homes are filled with love and stability. “A child who is happy at school and who feels valued, cared for and included is what we aim for. The ‘care for children’ approach is becoming ever more important in our schools as life becomes more and more complex.”
Looking to 2021 and beyond, Crane said the focus of the school will always be towards the learners and what they can do and how they are coping in the school.
“We have navigated the academic hurdles that have been placed in our way. What is far more important to us is the well-being of each and every young person on our campus and our priority has and always will be these children.”
