Covid-19: SA officially moves into third wave with 9 149 new cases
As of 10 June, the country had 71 617 active cases of Covid-19, with 9 149 new cases.

The Department of Health announced that the country officially moved into the third wave of Covid-19 on June 10.
This was after the national seven-day moving average (5 959) exceeded the new wave threshold as defined by the ministerial advisory committee.

Gauteng is leading the new wave with the highest number of active cases in the country and 61% (5 597) of new cases on June 10, followed by the Western Cape with 932 new cases, which is just 10% of the national cases.
The country recorded 100 new deaths on June 10, bringing the country to a total of 57 410 deaths as a result of the virus to date.
There has also been a steady increase in hospital admissions, with 7 300 people registered in hospital with Covid-19 on June 10.
June 9 saw a large increase to the new case numbers, jumping to 8 881 new cases from just 4 209 new cases recorded on June 8.
The recovery rate has slowly decreased this week, with a 92.5% recovery rate recorded on June 10 as opposed to a 93% recovery rate on June 6.
The Director General of Health Dr Sandile Buthelezi announced on June 8 that the Department of Health remains committed and capable of managing the Covid-19 pandemic as they are led by acting Minister of Health Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane. This follows the president’s decision to place Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize on special leave pending the outcome of the Special Investigating Unit’s investigation into the Digital Vibes matter.
Buthelezi also announced that the government has officially vaccinated over one million senior citizens aged 60 and above under phase 2.
On June 10, the country had administered 1 619 011 vaccines, ramping up from 1 343 433 on June 6.
The positivity testing rate on June 10 was recorded at 15.7%, with a total of 12 044 072 tests conducted by June 10.
