Club marks its successful season

NOORDWYK – A number of underwater hockey players from the Christ Church club were acknowledged for their participation and efforts throughout the 2020/2021 season.

The Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club celebrated the end of their season with an awards ceremony.

The club’s chairman, Stefan Köstlin, said with Covid-19 restrictions hindering most sporting codes, the club anticipated a quiet start to the season.

“Resuming our season under strict protocols, we were enormously encouraged to see how many of our members eagerly returned to the pool. It goes to show how desperately our youngsters missed the social interaction and physical exercise,” he said.

“While we were not able to do our usual recruitment drive for junior members in the off season, our senior members turned out en masse and kicked the season off with a bang.”

Some of the club’s highlights, according to Köstlin, were the results in the various leagues for the men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ leagues during a national tournament in Somerset West from 30 April to 1 May.

The U19 men and women teams took home gold, whereas the U15 girls won silver and the U15 boys placed fourth.

“We are tremendously proud as a club to have had our members comprise the majority of the Gauteng provincial teams.

“The season calendar was a bit subdued due to us not being able to hold our usual local tournaments to which the clubs from Pretoria, Rustenburg and Potchefstroom are usually invited.”

Some winners from the club’s award ceremony included:

• U15 girls best player: Sharon Millar and Ashlyn de Fin

• U15 boys best player: Ethan Mitchell

• U19 girls best player: Nikita Joyce

• U19 boys best player: Ethan de Villiers

• Coach of the year: Sean Martin

The 2021/2022 season is set to kick off in September at Christ Church Preparatory School and College.
