Both St Peter’s preparatory schools were open on July 26 for learners to attend classes after being closed due to lockdown Level 4 regulations.
The regulations saw schools closed for a longer time due to a surge in positive cases during the third wave.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the country on July 25 and announced the move from Level 4 to Level 3 lockdown which saw learners return to school. Marketer at St Peter’s Girls Prep, Nthabeleng Nhlapo said a large number of learners had returned and were excited to see their friends again.
“Close to 90% of pupils from the Pre-Prep to Grade 7 were back on campus by 8:00. The standard anti-transmission protocols were in place – well-spaced desks, masks and transparent shields.
“In addition, the school was divided into discrete areas separating the grades to limit Covid transmission between groups. It was clear that what the children had missed most was interaction with their friends and sports,” she said.
Some measures put in place for the learners upon returning included temperature checks, being sanitised and spaces for their bags to be put. A few learners arrived at the school as early as 6:30.
Nhlapo concluded that it was an overall successful day for the learners’ first day back.
“During the lockdown, many had contributed to the collection of food and necessities which the school sent down to communities affected by the recent spate of protests and looting. The children were eager to know if their offerings had been delivered.
“In one of the last lessons of the day, a Grade 2 girl said she had never known a day to go so quickly and she really wished it wasn’t home time already.”
