After more than a month-long second term break due to lockdown adjusted Level 4, learners at Unity College were happy to return to on-site classes and reunite with friends as schools reopened on July 26.
This after President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced during his nation address on July 25 that the National Coronavirus Command Council had agreed that schools should reopen for on-site learning.
Retha van Niekerk, the principal at the Chartwell school which caters for learners with special needs, said the majority of learners were happy to return for on-site learning.
“We have indeed welcomed back our learners and teachers who were on term two breaks from June 25 to July 20 for on-site learning. Apart from the great excitement to be back on school premises, everything went well. The school was well prepared for reopening. We just need to remain vigilant and ensure that our learners adhere to all Covid-19 safety protocols. We had no challenges because we were well prepared for the opening day,” she said.
Van Niekerk added that only three learners elected to continue with online learning. “We have three children doing online learning by choice and we respect their choice.”
