Two male suspects who were arrested for the attempted murder of a police officer and possession of unlicensed firearm were remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on November 24.
The suspects aged 26 and 28 were arrested on November 22 in Diepsloot.
Spokesperson for Diepsloot Police Station, Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the police received a tip-off about two men who were allegedly seen carrying firearms and attempting to rob a victim on William Nicol Drive near Diepsloot Mall.
He said police acted swiftly on the information and proceeded to the location where the suspects were spotted.
“When the police alighted from their car, the suspects allegedly drew firearms and started shooting at them, but no one was injured. The suspects fled into a nearby open field where they hid. Back-up was called, including a Fidelity security helicopter which assisted in the search of the suspects,” Mathebula said.
“One suspect was allegedly found in possession of a firearm and 10 live ammunition [rounds].
The police searched for the other firearm and could not find it.”
