Sanco in Zone 14 calls on Premier David Makhura to intervene in K46 road construction project

MEC said he was happy that the project has finally resumed and urged those unhappy with some processes in the project to raise their concerns with the department.

After many years of delay, the construction project of K46 road, also known as William Nicol Drive, has finally resumed.

The road construction project, which connects Diepsloot and Fourways communities was halted for almost six years following problems with the previous contractor that failed to finish the project.

MEC for Roads and Transport Jacob Mamabolo said he was happy that the project has finally resumed and urged those unhappy with some processes in the project to raise their concerns with the department and not disrupt the project.

Mamabolo was speaking during a meeting with community members at the Diepsloot Youth Centre on April 12.

“The construction project of K46 has resumed and I am very happy with what has been done so far. The project is expected to finish in July 2023 and create almost 300 job opportunities for locals. Local SMMEs will also benefit from the project as sub-contractors are required by the law.”

Chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Zone 14, Peter Lekalakala said they were not happy with the issue of community beneficiation in the project and urged Premier David Makhura to intervene.

“The issue of community beneficiation on K46 has not been dealt with comprehensively and we feel that the department wants to do what it always does, to rob locals from what they deserve. We have engaged with the department on several occasions owing to our past experiences with projects of this nature,” Lekalakala said.
