35-year-old male suspect appears at the Randburg Magistrate Court for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition
DIEPSLOOT– Police spokesperson said the police asked the suspect to produce a licence for possessing the firearm and he failed to do so.
Police arrested a 35-year-old man in Diepsloot Ext 1 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, soon after he had allegedly fired shots.
Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the suspect was arrested by members of the Public Order Policing Unit on June 5.
He said the officers asked the suspect to produce a licence for possessing the firearm and he failed to do so.
“The members were conducting patrols in Ext 1 when they allegedly heard gunshots. They then proceeded to the direction where the shots were heard. While still searching, they came across a VW Golf parked next to the street with four occupants inside. The police then pounced on the men and conducted a search. During a search, a firearm was allegedly found hidden under the driver’s seat,” said Mathebula.
He said the suspect appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on June 7 and was remanded in custody.
Mathebula added that Diepsloot Police Station Commander Brigadier Koena Moichela commended the officers for their vigilance and urged officers to stop at nothing to get rid of illegal firearms in the community.
