Community members give back to those in need

The Sandwich Day initiative was started six years ago.

Members of the community joined hands on July 6 to do their part for 67 minutes for Nelson Mandela Day.

As part of Sandwich Day, the community members devoted their time and energy to make sandwiches for those in need in Fourways and surrounds. Sandwich Day is an initiative where individuals, communities and corporates make sandwiches for the less fortunate.

The founder of Sandwich Day and secretary treasurer at BNI Bizmasters, Caryn Myers, said she started the initiative six years ago. “We started the initiative because we wanted to give back to the community around us,” she explained.

Different branches of BNI Bizmasters also participate in the initiative.

One of the people who made sandwiches on the day, Megan Hunter, said, “We need kindness in the world, and it has been such a difficult time for so many. If we can give back by making sure that a family has a [filling] meal for the day, then we need to do this.”

Locals gathered at Bryanston Sports Club to make the sandwiches. They made more than 1 000 sandwiches in over an hour and gave distributed them on the same day. “A lot of us live in Fourways and that is where we handed out the sandwiches,” said Hunter.

Myers concluded that there are children who only have one meal a day – if they can help one child during their 67 minutes, ‘it is a no-brainer’.
