My Pet and Me: Kate Engelbrecht and Colby
Colby is a calm leader of the pack as the 10-year-old border collie is described by his owner Kate Engelbrecht.
Colby, a 10-year-old border collie, is the pride and joy of a local resident.
Kate Engelbrecht has had Colby since he was a puppy and their bond has grown even stronger almost 11 years later. He is her only dog, but he has many friends who stay with Engelbrecht’s mom, Nina who has close to six other dogs. “My mom has a pack of border collies, six of them with two Jack Russells. He is the leader of the pack, with my mother,” she said.
“Colby’s personality is very similar to mine. I’m a Leo, and I’m a leader. He is the same, the leader of the pack. He is calm and patient, extremely so. I see him through such rose-coloured glasses that I think he is the perfect boy. He has really gotten me through a lot of dark times.”

Engelbrecht mentioned Colby’s immense patience as she has a tendency of dressing him up in different outfits that often have significance. Recently, Colby alongside Engelbrecht took part in a walkathon for breast cancer. “He is very well trained, and he gets involved a lot. Recently we’ve done something called CGC [Canine Good Citizen] that proves your dog is a good dog. It’s basic commands that they will listen to. If there are other dogs, or distractions or how to cross a road, so he is very special.”

When he not being a well-behaved member of the public, Colby enjoys swimming in dams, getting cuddles from Engelbrecht, and tugging on a rope.
“What makes Colby unique is that while he is a typical border collie, which is very clever, as a leader of the pack, he is not an aggressive dog. He is so well-rounded, calm, and raised many puppies.”
