Dam’s rescue mission takes baby steps

The mission to rescue the Lonehill Dam is progressing slowly as tests and planning are prioritised.

There is slow but steady progress in the rebuilding of the Lonehill Dam wall, which collapsed in August last year.

As a result, significant water was lost and the dam’s inhabitants were under threat.
According to Nadeem Abrahams of the Lonehill Residents Association (LRA), they are happy with the progress being made by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the appointed contractors.

“We are in constant communication with JRA and the contractors. We are satisfied with the progress they are making as everything needs to be planned and tests need to be done,” he said.

He added that the association now needs to reclaim the dam from all the invasive species that have taken over.
Concerned citizen Timon Lamprey offered to rescue some of the fish that have been washed away into pipes and overflow sections and relocate them to a temporary home. “My friend lives in this area and when I saw how bad the situation was, I got in contact with Nadeem to help catch and relocate the fish until their home gets fixed,” said Lamprey.

Abrahams had previously mentioned that contractors were formally appointed in November 2022 and quotations had been requested for the work.

The LRA hasn’t abandoned its efforts to do groundwork while the process and planning continue. “We know there are processes to go through and we believe they are on the right track and I am satisfied with the communication and updates we are getting from them,” said Abrahams.
