Nigel Forfar: The Douglasdale resident making a difference
Meet Nigel Forfar, a dedicated resident of Douglasdale who has taken it upon himself to collect litter in his neighbourhood. His efforts have not only made the streets cleaner but have also inspired others to take action and make a difference in their community.
Douglasdale resident Nigel Forfar takes it upon himself to make a difference in his community. His love for the environment and his desire to keep his neighbourhood clean has led him to engage in a selfless act of collecting litter around the Lesley Avenue area.
Forfar usually takes his dogs for a walk to ensure everyone in the house stays fit. One day during his usual walks, Forfar’s dog was injured by broken glass on the street. This incident affected him to the point where he decided to make the streets a cleaner and safer place for residents and their pets.
His daily routine involves walking around the streets of Douglasdale, Alexander, Westway, and Leslie while collecting empty containers, broken glass, plastics, and tins. He then sorts the items and puts them in the recycling bin. This simple act not only keeps the streets clean but also encourages recycling, which is essential in reducing waste and protecting the environment.

Forfar has become a familiar face in the neighbourhood, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. The residents of Douglasdale appreciate his selfless act, and some have even joined him in his quest to keep the streets clean. This act of community service is not only beneficial to the environment but also helps foster a sense of togetherness and unity among the residents.
According to Forfar, many people do not realise the impact that littering has on the environment. Litter can cause harm to plants and animals and can even lead to the pollution of waterways. By engaging in this act of community service, he is not only making the streets cleaner but also helping to create awareness about the importance of a clean environment.

“In October, the broken bottles on our walk became a problem as it is not clear where the broken glass is in the grass, and the dogs walk over it. At this point, I had become so irritated with all the rubbish I decided that rather than moan about it to my wife, I would start collecting the empty containers.
“These were glass, plastic, and tins, and I put them in the recycling at home. I started with one bag, but we were not down Douglas before it was full, and we still had Alexander, Westway, and Leslie to do. So we started taking two bags and typically got back with thirty containers.”
His efforts are a testament to the fact that every individual can make a difference in their community. It does not take much to engage in an act of community service, and the impact of such acts can be significant. His dedication and commitment to keeping the streets clean have inspired many, and his actions have set an example for others to follow.
Chris Santana, Ward 106 councillor, commends Nigel Forfar’s act of community.
