Good Samaritans saves two men from near-death experience

Hiscox had to pull over her car to assist in saving two men from losing their lives.

Vicki Hiscox, Tania Hoffmeyer, and three other Good Samaritans had to quickly think on their feet and use the little they had to save the lives of two men who got involved in a terrible accident along Witkoppen Road in Fourways, on June 27.

“The car that the gentlemen were driving in had overturned. There was oil and petrol spilled all over the road and they were badly hurt. It was not good at all.”

Speaking to Fourways Review, Hiscox who is a businesswoman and owner of Viccanco Pet Supplies said, she was out to make deliveries to customers when she noticed unusual traffic on Witkoppen road along the way.

The car that the two men were driving after the accident.

“As I got closer, I saw a lady on the side of the road running to her car and I realised, ‘Oh no there is an accident’ and because I have worked as a veterinary nurse all my life and I have been in similar situations, I immediately stopped to assist.”

She saw two men lying on the gravel side of the road with serious injuries. She said it was too hard for her to drive past but little did she know that she had multiple tasks to perform ahead.

“We were fighting to stop their bleeding while they were going in and out of consciousness. It was myself, a vet nurse, a paramedic that was off duty and another trying to keep the men alive. Fortunately, we were able to succeed to stop most of the bleeding. They could have lost their lives, it was such an emergency situation.”

The sand that Vicki Hiscox and the other good Samaritans had used to cover up oil and petrol spills.

She said they tried too many times to call the emergency services personnel like the police, paramedics, and fire brigades with no success.

“We called 10111 and we were put on hold, we tried calling Douglasdale police station, but no one answered, we called the fire department, but no one picked up the phone. Motorists going up and down past the accident, we had to make plans to control traffic as well.”

But what shocked the group to the core, they said, was when a police van passed as if nothing happened.

The other view of the car that rolled over after an accident on Tuesday, June 27.

“I waved at him, and he drove past. We thought maybe he saw us and was going to return shortly, but nothing. I was so shocked because these are the people, we have trusted to help us.”

Hiscox said although she had an awful day trying to get help for the injured men for two hours, she has learned that there are still kind people around Fourways.

Vicki Hiscox had to pause her deliveries to save two men involved in an accident.

“I wish the government employees in the emergency services can love what they do because they were trained to help people. And they should update their contact information online because, after a Google search, you find that the number is not working. It must be easy to have access to such services because they are extremely important.”

After many attempts to get hold of the emergency services, she said she called Technical Reaction Security Services (TRSS) who attended the scene within a few minutes.

“A huge thank you to the Technical Reaction Security Services for responding so quickly. You can see in the pictures that there is sand by the car, along the road and middle of the road. We had to use what we could to cover up the oil.”

Fourways Review reached out to TRSS for the confirmation of the scene, and they said that they would revert with more information before going to print.

“I am so happy that we were able to help them and relieved that both of them are recovering well in hospital,” Hiscox concluded.
