Miss Earth delegate and ward councillor preserve the environment

Miss Earth delegate teams up with the ward councillor to preserve the environment by planting trees in the community.

Miss Earth 2023 delegate, Katlego Matjila has teamed up with Ward 94 councillor, David Foley and the community to increase green spaces and make it a better place for the future.

Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership and empowerment programme for young women. The objective is to assist young change-makers with the skills and knowledge to tackle different social and environmental issues within their communities so that they are able to make a direct and meaningful impact on people and the planet. We teach them about the environment, challenges and solutions and encourage them to preach the ways of going green.

As part of the programme, delegates have to activate their own community projects and Matjila initiated the tree-planting project in her community. “This month on June 5 we had World Environmental Day and the Miss Earth delegates were given the task of planting trees in our community which encourages awareness and action for the protection of our environment. We need to know the importance of the health of our environment as it is a major issue, which affects the well-being of people and economic development throughout the world. I want to make a difference by promoting a green environment,” said Matjila.

“We planted at Link Road which has no trees, and with no trees, it’s extremely hot in the summer and this will give pedestrians some shade going forward. I have assisted Miss Earth before and will continue to do so. It’s critical that we preserve our earth in totality,” said Ward 94 councillor David Foley.

The activation aims also to extend its reach beyond planting to also include a lesson on trees and the natural environment so that the community can take care of the trees going forward.
