Dainfern moms look out for GBV victims
The moms of previous learners from Dainfern College have made goodies that were recently donated to gender-based victims.
The mothers of former learners of Dainfern College, Lisa Mancer and Belinda Bouchier recently handed over 20 handmade bags to Brown Lekekela from Green Door, a shelter for victims of gender-based violence and femicide.
The bags were filled with scarves, socks, facecloths, toothbrushes and toiletries and were tailored and packed by the pair.
The head of marketing at Dainfern College, Lindokuhle Maluleka said the school was very proud of the pair because they lived up to the school’s vision.
“We are so grateful to our Dainfern families who continue to support our initiatives even after their children have left the college. These enduring relationships, community spirit and support for those less fortunate make our college such a special place to be,” said Maluleka.
Lekekela expressed his gratitude for such a wonderful gesture. He said the victims at the shelter were full of excitement when he arrived with the donations.
“We are so grateful because the ladies felt really good about the fact that there are people who are looking out for them even though they live far away.”
He added Green Door had always been a safe space for both women and men who were victims of gender-based violence or needed assistance with other issues.
“We have achieved great milestones since we started because our mission is to empower women because they are usually the victims. However, even men are welcomed at our shelter.”
