60 million people targeted to help Cllr keep Fourways clean

Councillor David Foley launched an ambitious campaign to rid Fourways of litter, targeting millions of people to join the cleanliness crusade.

David Foley, councillor for Ward 94, is taking the age-old proverb: ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness’, to heart with his latest initiative. Foley is rallying residents to pick up litter and keep their neighbourhoods spotless, with the aim to restore Fourways to its former glory.

He said he is targeting a staggering 60 million people, with hopes to inspire a sense of pride and responsibility among locals, ultimately transforming the area into a pristine oasis.

“Imagine if every one of them picked up the litter around them. Wouldn’t that be a dream come true in terms of cleanliness?”

Foley’s initiative is not about grand gestures; it’s about making a difference through small, collective actions. “I’m not asking for much. Just pick up a piece of paper, put it in a nearby bin, or take it home and dispose of it properly.”

He said he plans to lead by example by dedicating time each week to go street-to-street with residents, picking up litter and spreading awareness about the importance of keeping their community clean.

His ultimate goal is to instill a sense of pride among locals, making them feel embarrassed to even think of littering.

Foley believes that Fourways can be transformed into a model community, where cleanliness and responsibility are valued above all else, if the community works together with him. “I am asking the community to join this initiative. Their children are being taught about recycling and not littering at school. So, if their parents are practicing what they are being taught by their teachers, they would take these lessons very seriously. We will not only be keeping our environment clean but also protecting animals from consuming these plastics. Even cigarette butts should not just be dumped randomly. “
