The young talent galloping toward greatness
From a terrified beginner to a competitive equestrian star, Qiqa’s journey in the world of horse riding is nothing short of remarkable.

At just 14 years old, Qiqa Marala has embarked on an extraordinary journey in the world of equestrian sports, blossoming from a hesitant beginner into a competitive rider making waves on the national stage.
In less than two years, she has not only conquered her fears but has also proven her mettle, representing Gauteng in the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) national championships.
Qiqa’s passion for horse riding was ignited at a friend’s horse-themed birthday party in 2021. “That experience sparked something within me. I was terrified when I started. I would often come up with excuses to avoid lessons, saying things like ‘I have a headache’ or ‘there’s too much homework,’ but my mom encouraged me to at least give it a try,” she said.

The journey began in June 2022 when Qiqa enrolled at El Dorado Stables in Chartwell, where she quickly found a welcoming environment that eased her into the world of horses.
“The warm atmosphere and the hands-on approach helped me get to know the horses and the sport better.”
With two lessons a week, Qiqa began to build her confidence, learning about horse care, grooming, and riding techniques.

While the early days were challenging, she persevered through her fears, thanks in part to the support of her family and her coach, Ashleigh Clements.
“There were moments I felt I was lagging behind peers who had more experience but my family was so supportive, always eager to hear about my lessons and watch my progress.”

In 2024, Qiqa took a significant step forward by registering to compete in Sanesa with her horse Sunny. The duo faced several qualifiers, culminating in a spot at the provincial competition, where they represented Joburg.
The excitement didn’t stop there, they later advanced to the national competition, where they placed an impressive sixth out of 29 riders from across the country.
Experiencing the thrill of competition has taught Qiqa several valuable lessons. “I’ve learned to focus on my performance rather than worrying about what others think.”
When asked for advice for newcomers preparing for their first Sanesa competition, Qiqa stressed the importance of hard work and building a bond with one’s horse.
“Spend as much time as you can with your horse; that connection is vital. And always remember to relax and have fun.”
Balancing her riding career with her academic responsibilities has been a careful juggling act for Qiqa. “I typically have my riding lessons right after school, which gives me time to complete homework before heading out.”
Qiqa proudly reflects on a significant achievement; making the Gauteng team after her first year in Sanesa. “It was a surreal moment when my mom shared the news with me. I couldn’t believe I had made it so far in such a short time.”
