Local runner embraces his passion for the open road
As Marco Paulo Campos prepares for his fourth attempt at the iconic Comrades Marathon, his journey serves as a testament to resilience, community, and the healing power of the open road.
It’s not rare to come across someone with an incredible story, but few can rival the journey of Fourways-based runner Marco Paulo Campos.
What started as a quest to add cardio to his gym routine has transformed into a life-changing passion that has consumed him for over five years.
At the age of five, Campos faced a life-altering challenge when he was paralyzed from the waist down. After learning to walk again, he initially had little interest in running, an activity he once proclaimed never to embrace. Yet, after trying to run for the first time, everything changed. “There was a shift in my mind. Running became my lifeline. I eat, sleep, and breathe it now.”

Despite his newfound passion, Campos faced significant hurdles in his running career, with three consecutive did-not-finish (DNF) records at the prestigious Comrades Marathon. Set to tackle the grueling 89km race again this year, he is determined to conquer the challenge. “I’ve learned that every setback is a lesson. Whether it was blisters, mismanaged cutoffs, or pacing, each attempt has taught me something vital.”
Running isn’t just about personal achievement for Campos; it’s his way of giving back. Through his social media platform: Inspired by Strides, he shares his experiences in the hope of inspiring others, particularly those facing challenges. “It’s so much more than just running; it’s about mental health, community, and connection.”
As a member of the Mavericks Athletics Club, a triathlon club where he actively trains, Campos is also the founder of the 5AM Club in Johannesburg. Each Tuesday through Thursday, he gathers runners at dawn for structured speed and hill sessions. “Run slow to go fast. It’s essential to nurture the community and help beginners find their stride. We all grow together.”

Campos emphasises the importance of the running community, calling it a global support network that creates deep bonds. “Running is inherently difficult, but shared struggles foster powerful connections. The long runs are like trauma bonding. You share the pain and triumphs, which deepens friendships.”
Beyond his morning club, Campos has launched an initiative called: Miles that Matter, aiming to connect runners from different communities. “My goal is to build an inclusive movement that encourages everyone, regardless of pace, to come together and support each other.”
As for his personal running goals, he aims to establish a more profound impact within the running community, while achieving his milestones. “I want to run 10 Comrades and 10 Two Oceans Ultras to secure my blue number.”

With aspirations to complete a full Ironman next year, and target a sub-3:29 marathon at the Cape Town Marathon, Campos is setting the bar high for himself.
Campos credits the running community with allowing him to thrive, saying: “Being surrounded by dedicated athletes pushes you to become better. It’s about sharing knowledge, experiences, and support.”
His motivation echoes throughout the community. “Just put your shoes on and show up to run. You’re already taking the first step toward creating connections.”
As Campos prepares for yet another attempt at the Comrades Marathon, he carries with him the voices of those he inspires, demonstrating that in running, as in life, every mile matters.
