Farmall residents demand urgent road repairs

Residents of Farmall are increasingly frustrated as their roads become impassable, unsafe, and neglected.

Residents living in and around the Farmall area are voicing increasing frustration over the deplorable state of their roads, which have become almost impassable and pose serious safety risks.

According to resident Kirsten Nel, despite repeated complaints to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), little has been done to address the deteriorating infrastructure, leaving residents to navigate unsafe shortcuts and risking delays for emergency response teams.

Nel said, “Watercombe Road, a critical access route into Farmall from the Fourways side, has become completely inaccessible. In response, residents have resorted to driving through footpaths in the veld to reach their homes, a dangerous workaround that underscores the severity of the problem.
“The ungraded and poorly maintained roads have made it impossible for visitors, service providers, and emergency vehicles to reach the community efficiently.
She added that the roads were seldom graded or maintained. “We are continuously ignored, and it’s only getting worse. We need these sand roads tarred and made usable before someone gets seriously hurt or worse.”

She added that communications sent to JRA about the situation have gone unanswered, leaving residents feeling abandoned.

Ward 93 councillor Rufus Maswazi confirmed that the roads have been in a very bad state for more than six months. “I have been reporting this to JRA, and the last update I received was that they are coming. We are waiting for concrete action. JRA officials are scheduled to visit Toto Chartwell on May 22 to assess the condition and discuss a way forward for the area.”

Fourways Review reached out to the Johannesburg Roads Agency for comment on May 15, but no information was received before going to print. More information will be provided once it becomes available.
